AD&D Policies and Supplements
Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) can be purchased as an add-on to a term or whole life policy that you already have, but you can also buy it separately if you feel the need to obtain such coverage. There is some controversy over whether or not it is a good idea to be covered in this way, so read on to learn more about how it works.
A Very Specific Benefit
Before purchasing, you should understand that AD&D insurance has extremely limited applications. Namely, it only pays out for death or the loss of a limb that is the direct and proven result of an accident. If you are in a fatal accident, or one that causes you the loss of a limb, vision, hearing, or speech, your beneficiary will be paid either up to double the amount of your standard term policy (if you have AD&D as a rider or supplement) or up to the maximum amount if you have purchased the benefit separately.
The payout structure for dismemberment typically looks like this:
-
Loss of one member (hand, foot, arm, leg, vision in one eye, hearing, or speech) pays half.
-
Loss of two or more members pays the full benefit.
-
Partial or complete paralysis tends to pay 25-50% depending on the policy regulations.
While accident coverage is very typical and most insurers will include it almost automatically since it is a very affordable option, just how much help it provides is debatable since the likelihood of dying in a covered accident is small.
Limitations on Coverage
Typically, death or dismemberment that occurs because of a surgery or another medical procedure, loss caused by physical illness or a mental disorder, drugs, or other illnesses will not qualify toward the redemption of this sort of rider or individual policy. In fact, your benefits may not even pay out if the accident occurred while partaking in a dangerous hobby or sport, or while employed in a risky occupation like fighting in the military or doing police work. You will need to ask your insurer if you are concerned about specific scenarios, and you should always read the fine print to know the details about your coverage so that no one is surprised by the rules if the time comes to make a claim.
Other Choices
Because AD&D insurance has become a contested issue in recent years, many people have decided to use other options, namely purchasing extra “regular” coverage in order to be better protected. Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefits are extremely affordable – cheap even – but they lack the comprehensiveness to make them a real worthwhile investment. Instead, you may want to consider paying the difference to increase your regular benefit so that no matter what the cause of death, your loved ones will have the highest possible payout.
